A Look Into Charleston
The city of Charleston, SC, encompasses gorgeous cobblestone streets and is bordered by the Charleston Harbor, home of Fort Sumter where the United States Civil War first began. The fourth largest, and wealthiest, colonial city holds its rich history dear to its heart and continues to entail it into the everyday culture of Charleston life. Whether you may be a local or a tourist, downtown or at the beach, activities in Charleston are in surplus. Now, let’s take a closer look into what a successful trip in Charleston might include.
Our Recommendations
Spending time in the downtown district of the city, be sure to check out some casual classic southern bbq and sides at Rodney Scott’s BBQ. Rodney Scott’s BBQ started with a friendship between two Southern BBQ masters - Rodney and Nick Pihakis. Rodney has been cooking whole hogs since he was in middle school, working at his family BBQ spot in Hemingway, SC for 25 years before striking out on his own, and that experience is evident in the wonderful plates served up at this down-home classic BBQ joint. The great eats do not stop there though, if you’re interested in pursuing some true southern class, take a trip over to The Obstinate Daughter, or Husk. Located on Sullivan's Island and inspired by Italian, French, and Spanish cuisine, The Obstinate Daughter has a seasonally-changing menu which is provided by local farms and fisheries that help give the restaurant a true local flair and taste. As for Husk, the cuisine follows suit to their local providers and varies by seasonal offerings as well. Husk’s Executive Chef, Travis Grimes, notes that “ ... [its] not about rediscovering Southern cooking but exploring the reality of Southern food”. If you’re interested in keeping your evening rolling past dinner, Charleston’s nightlife is alive and well at various locations. Really enjoying your time at Husk? Make a stop over at The Bar at Husk to share some more Charleston classics such as cocktails served by their master bartenders. Looking to continue exploring this historical downtown? Cheers some delicious Moscow Mules in real copper cups over at The Rarebit for only $5 during their 4:00 - 7:00 PM Happy Hour running Tuesday to Friday.
These are just a handful of our picks when taking a trip to Downtown Charleston. For other top-quality recommendations, head over to Charleston Magazine to learn more from their year-round Charleston coverage.
